Producing an art/design piece with editions has become a widespread practice lately.
Edition indicates that a specific art/design piece is produced more than one instead of a one, unique object. This is not an industrial object produced by serial production but an artwork produced by the artist herself, in a limited number. Editions are considered as art or design pieces. The artist/designer creates the work around a specific concept, question and produces it at a limited number that she decides.
By producing 10, 20, 30, 100 or 1000 of one art/design piece instead of just one, it is aimed to facilitate its dissemination within society. A work that is produced in a limited number will be able to reach as many individuals as its production count. For instance if a work is produced in 55 editions it will be a limited product that only 55 person can acquire.
The artist/designer should also keep a decided amount of the production to herself to be able to claim its authenticity if needed. For example if a photograph is printed in 55 editions, at least one additional copy should be produced at the same size and using the same technique to be kept by the artist/designer. The editions that the artist/designer holds should not be sold. They are rather important for checking the authenticity of the work in face of any problems that may occur in time related to its authenticity.
Today, against the fast rhythm of economy, producing in editions can be preferred as an intense production method in arts. As the number of a work’s or product’s editions increase, its price decreases, thus becoming more accessible. Within fields of arts and design, each piece produced/created are signed exclusively by the artist/designer, does not sacrifice its authenticity and becomes more accessible due to their lower price range.

Besides, many mediums under fine and digital arts can be produced in editions. Editions are used in photography, video, sculpture, print etc. as a method and tool for accessibility. With being limited and accessible, editions appeal to a larger group of people than merely collectors. Disseminating among larger audiences, authentic and limited works can attract new buyers as well. As the editions spread, the work becomes more visible in the society as a tool of expression.
With producing editions, an artist/designer has the potential to convey the concepts and subjects that she explores in her works, to larger groups of people. Thus the work of art/design becomes a strong tool for ideas to spread, shared, emphasized among the society, instead of being limited to concepts like aesthetic concerns, accessibility and budget.
In short, edition in arts and design; is a powerful production model which becomes more accessible as its number increase, collectively disseminated within socio-cultural structures, make no compromises in terms of its authenticity, can present an idea to larger audiences and sustains the collectivist approach of our day.
